One Tree Hill 21st Anniversary Event in Wilmington, NC

Every two years, One Tree Hill (OTH) die-hard fans from all over the world gather together in Wilmington, NC (affectionately known as Tree Hill to fans) to celebrate the beloved TV show that left a lasting imprint on us all. I've seen the event advertised for years, and this year I was finally able to go! This year's event, taking place in September, was especially magical as it was the 21st-anniversary celebration of the show and my sister's 30th birthday!

A Walk Down Memory Lane

For those who don't know, One Tree Hill is a teen drama that ran from 2003 to 2012. It came out right as Dawson's Creek was ending. For nine seasons, fans tuned in to follow the lives of the Scott brothers, their friends, and the ups and downs of growing up in Tree Hill. For many, the show is a story of friendship, growth, and dreams set against the scenic backdrop of a small coastal town. And while it’s been over a decade since the final episode aired, One Tree Hill continues to hold a special place in the hearts of fans, both old and new. Many of us rewatch the show time and time again. Not only because of the weeks leading up to the anniversary event but also because there is a new podcast called Drama Queens. Bethany Joy Lenz, Hilarie Burton, and Sophia Bush (Haley, Peyton, and Brooke from the show) rewatch each episode in order and talk about what it was like filming the show 21 years ago.

State Championship Basketball Game

The three-day celebration took place this year from September 22-24. Although my sister and I only attended the State Championship reunion basketball game, the city buzzed with excitement as other attendees gathered on Friday for a pep rally, on Saturday for an after-game "press conference," for meet and greets with the OTH cast, and on Sunday for a birthday party.

Iconic Locations

In addition to the ticketed events, the city became part of the event’s charm, as the event's organizer set up familiar filming locations at local businesses. For example, my sister and I visited Karen’s Café, Clothes Over Bros, and Carl's Crab Shack. Of course, we also got the famous Naley "Don't say I never gave you anything" photo along the river.

A Quaint City

For those who have watched the show, it’s impossible to separate Tree Hill from Wilmington. For me and my sister, Wilmington has always been a place we visited since we have family there. We used to spend summers at the beach enjoying seafood and taking in the quaint city. Once we found OTH, Wilmington became that much more special. The city is located along the Cape Fear River so enjoying time downtown along the river and eating ice cream is always a treat.

Fan Engagement

Attending the event with other fans made the event more meaningful. My sister and I have visited many of the filming locations together, but with the other hundreds of fans swarming the streets with us, there was a sense of comradery I hadn't felt before. The anniversary event wasn’t just about reliving TV moments; it was also about celebrating the sense of community and friendship that One Tree Hill has fostered over the years.

Music and the One Tree Hill Legacy

No One Tree Hill event would be complete without a celebration of the music that defined the series. The 21st-anniversary basketball game included a live half-time performance from Gavin DeGraw who sang his song and the show's theme song "I Don't Want to Be." Fans all around the stadium sang at the top of their lungs.

A Reunion of Friendship

The One Tree Hill 21st Anniversary event in Wilmington was not just a trip down memory lane but a celebration of how the show continues to inspire and bring people together. My sister and I are close, but our love for OTH is another thing that brings us together. From the passionate fan base to the cast who embraced their roles in the show’s legacy, the event reflected the enduring connection between the series and its viewers.

Final Thoughts

For many fans, One Tree Hill was more than just a TV show; it was a formative part of their adolescence and a reminder that "it's not about where you come from, it's about where you're going." As the event came to a close, my sister and I left Wilmington with new memories, amazing OTH merch, and "I Don't Want to Be"stuck in our heads.
