Gullah Goodness: A Flavorful Journey at Virgil's Kitchen
Updated: Jan 14, 2025

If you find yourself in West Midtown, Atlanta, and craving some authentic Southern cuisine with a Gullah twist, look no further than Virgil's Gullah Kitchen! My recent visit left me not only satisfied but also planning my next trip to enjoy the other delicious menu items I didn't have a chance to try.
Ambiance
The atmosphere is casual yet inviting, making it an ideal spot for a laid-back lunch or a fun date. The decor is a mix of rustic and contemporary elements, creating a comfortable setting for a meal with friends or family. The space downstairs is small and some of the tables feel too close to the bar. There is an upstairs that is more spacious, but I believe reservations are strongly suggested for sitting upstairs. There is a small outside patio, but in this Atlanta heat, it was too hot to enjoy the day I went. It was a bit loud for me with the music and the sounds of the guests and staff talking over one another, but I have grown sensitive to sound as I have gotten older (haha, I sound like I am 60 years old; I am not).
Menu
The menu at Virgil's Gullah Kitchen is a celebration of Gullah Geechee culture, featuring dishes like shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes, and a southern plate with fried chicken, collard greens, and mac n cheese. The top sellers when I was there were the shrimp and grits with crab and the after church plate (the fried chicken, collard greens, and mac n cheese plate). I opted for the a la carte items and made my own meal. I got the sweet potato waffles, salmon patty, and the shrimp basket. The sweet potato waffles were so good. They weren't too sweet, and you really didn't need the syrup if you didn't want it. The salmon patty was so meaty! The flavors were nice together, and it wasn't too salty. The shrimp were fried to perfection, and the sauce I got on the side was amazing! Looking at the menu, there were like 5 other items I wanted to try but didn't have room to eat all that. I will definitely go back!
Service
The service at Virgil's Gullah Kitchen is friendly and attentive. The staff is knowledgeable about the menu and happy to make recommendations based on your preferences.
